For those who are unfamiliar with glaucoma as a disease it may come as a surprise that it is the World's 2nd leading cause of blindness. More than 6.5 million people in the world became blind due to glaucoma - this numbers are more than the entire population of Singapore. The good news is glaucoma is the most treatable amongst the degenerative chronic eye diseases - like Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy - and the probability of maintaining vision for a life-time is good. |

Immediately, Dr. Khoo captivated me by his unassuming and gentle demeanour and I wondered what drives people like him to achieve so much. He was awarded this year's Visionary Award 2008 at the 7th National Congress of Optometry & Opticianry held in mid-September 2008. The first sentence of the citation tells us: |

Ba a proactive patient - join the Glaucoma Patients Association (Singapore).
Glaucoma is a progressive degenerative disease and managing it is a life-long pursuit. Talking with people who share some of your concerns can be very helpful.
Understanding the basics of glaucoma is the first step to protecting your vision. Nearly half of those with glaucoma do not know they have the disease.
The goal, this time, will be to surpass last year's achievements and make sure that the advocacy, awareness and screening efforts will be more vocal and better promoted to all glaucoma stakeholders: authorities, institutions, the industry, doctors and - above all - glaucoma patients, diagnosed and undiagnosed.
